About this listen

For fans of Uprooted and For the Wolf comes a dark, lushly gothic fantasy about a maiden who must unleash the monster within to save her kingdom. But the monster in her head isn't the only threat lurking.

Elspeth needs a monster. The monster might be her.

Elspeth Spindle needs more than luck to stay safe in the eerie, mist-locked kingdom of Blunder—she needs a monster. She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head. He protects her. He keeps her secrets.

But nothing comes for free, especially magic.

When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure Blunder from the dark magic infecting it. Except the highwayman just so happens to be the King’s own nephew, Captain of the most dangerous men in Blunder…and guilty of high treason.

He and Elspeth have until Solstice to gather twelve Providence Cards—the keys to the cure. But as the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly, darkly, taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him.

Phenomenal reader!!!!

I thought the reader completely brought that book to life! I considered reading the second book but loved the audio of the first one so much I decided against it. Finished book one about an hour ago….immediately onto the second!

Great story!! But narration meh.

I loved the story but didn’t love Lisa Cordileone narrating it. She did a great job at giving different characters different voices but there was just something. There are other female narrators who after listening to a book I’ll search for books they’ve narrated because I loved it so much.

The story was amazing; the audio enhanced it!

The story was great from page one to the last page. Could not put this book down, and I only did begrudgingly a few times. The audio enhanced the story, the voice actor was brilliant in bringing all the characters to life. I got chills a few time she did the nightmare! 10/10!

Amazing book, only one thing I’d love to have seen…

Loved it, the story, the magic, the plot and the immersive world-building and all, but, duet narration would have been chef’s kiss.

Loved it

The story is so creative and interesting. It's able to pull you in very easily and the way it unfolds makes me want to keep listening/reading. I read the book first and thought it was ingenious. The sequel can't come soon enough.
As for the performance of Lisa Cordileone, I want to say that she did a good job, but there are moments when she could afford to be clearer/louder with her narration. (Specifically when it comes to the nightmare.)
I am not saying she did a bad job, I'm just saying it could have been narrated better.
Regardless of if she's still the narrator for the sequel, that will be something I am guaranteed to buy as well.
Loved this one even despite the minor flaws.

More Hunger Games than ACOTAR.

One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig is set in the wonderfully dark and gothic town of Blunder, cut off from the rest of the world due to a mist that traps the townspeople and threatens them with dark magic. The Mist can infect victims with magic; anyone infected is considered evil and dangerous and sentenced to death. The female main character, Elspeth Spindel, has hidden her infection since childhood, never letting anyone know she shares her mind with another entity. When she meets a mysterious highwayman who harbours his secrets, she must risk her safety to collaborate with him to find a cure for the dark magic and save herself and everyone else.

I am unsure about my feelings towards this book that has gone viral on social media. However, I did listen to the entire 12-hour book in just two days, which is a testament to its engaging story. I particularly enjoyed the development of the magic in the story and the conversations between Elspeth and The Nightmare. I don't know if this is YA fiction or General Fiction, but it is more Hunger Games than ACOTAR.

Wish it was multiple voice actors rather then 1

I loved this book! Honestly my only complaint was 1 person trying to do both male & female voices 😣 it would have been so much better with a cast!

But the actual book was 5 stars ⭐️ very unique and different you get sucked right into the world!
